Laboratory Syllabus

Welcome to Botany Laboratory! In this course we will examine many of the cell and plant functions and structures discussed in the Botany Lecture. The time spent in the laboratory will give you the opportunity to observe and to become familiar with the laboratory and equipment. In addition, we will undertake a field assessment exercise to familiarize you with field practices and plant identification.

Course Description:

• BIO1010L is a 1 credit hour laboratory course taught in conjunction with a lecture class, Biology 1010. The class will cover fundamental concepts in biology as they relate to plant cell structure, biochemistry, plant anatomy, concept's of inheritance, plant diversity and the ecological roles of plants. The laboratory will supplement the lecture by encouraging students to study simple and complex plants in the laboratory, and to observe the structures and functions discussed in the lecture. A field exercise will be conducted to provide the student with experience with field methods and assessment practices.

Class Schedule:

• Laboratory will meet on Tuesday (Section 03174) or Thursday (Section 03177) from 3:30 PM until 5:30 PM in HT 728*.

• Botany Bio 1010, Customized for Charles County Community College, by J.G. Morgan and M.E.B. Carter

THE LAST DAY TO WITHDRAW FROM A CLASS WITHOUT A GRADE, OR TO CHANGE AN AUDIT-TO-CREDIT, AND CREDIT TO AUDIT, IS FRIDAY, APRIL 21, 2000.

Course Objectives:

Bio 1010L is intended to supplement the lectures of Bio 1010 with first hand experience with the concepts of biology. Students completing Bio 1010L will have accomplished the following:

• Developed a familiarity and proficiency using the microscope.

• Observed and distinguished between cellular organelles.

• Analyzed inheritance patterns.

• Surveyed the structure of the plant kingdom.

• Studied the structure and function of seed plants.

• Studied photosynthesis.

• Used and developed a proficiency with laptop computers and interactive software.

General Education Skills and Knowledge:

• Students successfully completing BIO 1010 will have demonstrated competency in the following academic skills:

1. To define or interpret unfamiliar words, and to use features such as the table of contents, index, appendix and glossary.
2. Conduct careful, thoughtful observations of objects in nature and science.
3. Describe their observations and measurements accurately using appropriate terms and units.
4. Interpret and draw conclusions based on their observations and measurements.
5. Evaluate the significance of their conclusions.
6. Interpret, analyze and evaluate spoken messages
7. Identify the main and subordinate ideas in spoken messages.
8. Follow spoken instructions.
9. Recognize valid and invalid reasoning.
10. Understand and use inductive and deductive reasoning
11. Draw reasonable conclusions from information found in various sources.
12. Distinguish between fact, opinion and inference.
13. Compare, contrast and classify information and concepts.
14. Recognize cause and effect

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Read exercises before coming to class
2. Maintain safe conduct at all times when in the laboratory.
3. Demonstrate proper care of laboratory equipment, keep the lab clean, return materials and equipment to proper places.
4. Prepare for field conditions on days field work is scheduled. Wear proper clothing, shoes, etc.

Test Content:

• Exams will deal exclusively with subject material covered in lab.

Test Format:

• Exams will be based on the material covered in the lab, lab exercises and assigned readings.

Grading Procedure (Lab):

• 2 Exams
• 1 Field Report
• 7 Lab exercise
• Active Participation in Laboratory Exercises

Grade Calculation for Lab:

• Class Participation Total = 10%
• Each Exam = 5% Total = 10%
• Field Report = 10% Total = 10%
• Each Lab = 10% Total = 70%
• Total = 100%

General Final Grading Scale for Course Grade:

• 90 - 100% = A
• 80 - 89% = B
• 70 - 79% = C
• 60 - 69% = D
• Below 60%= F

Border Line Grading Policy:

• A student with a border line numerical course average will be given the higher or lower grade at the discretion of the instructor.

Lecture/Lab Correlation:

• In a course such as this, a complete correlation between lecture and lab material is not always possible. However, every attempt has been made to keep lecture and lab materials closely aligned.

Make Up Exam/Quiz Policy:

1. For valid reasons (i.e., hospital stay, emergencies, etc.), a student MAY be excused from taking an exam at the scheduled time. In order to do this, the student MUST discuss with the instructor the reason for being excused, obtain permission, and make arrangements to take the exam either before or after the scheduled time.

2. If a student fails to take an exam at the scheduled time without permission of the instructor, she/he must present a written excuse (i.e., doctor’s note, etc.). In this case, the student MUST make arrangements to take the exam WITHIN ONE WEEK of the originally scheduled time. IF THE STUDENT FAILS TO FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE, SHE/HE WILL RECEIVE A GRADE OF ZERO (0) FOR THAT EXAM.

Attendance:

• The college requires that attendance be kept for administrative purposes. The instructor, however, is not required to use attendance or lack of it in the determination of grades. You will not be penalized for missing classes, however, since much of the lecture examination and all of the lab examination is based on in class discussion, it is to your advantage not to miss a lecture or lab unless absolutely necessary. Late arrivals and leaving early are particularly disruptive in the laboratory. If you arrive to class late please report directly to me. If you must leave early, see me at the beginning of class.

Out-of Class Assistance:

• Instructor’s hours are established for the purpose of assisting students outside of regular class times. The student should feel free to seek assistance, if necessary, during scheduled office hours. If these times are in conflict with the student’s schedule, the student should make an appointment with the instructor either in person or through the Department’s secretary. Scheduled office hours are listed on the first page of this syllabus.

• NO CHILDREN ARE ALLOWED IN CLASSROOM OR LAB. NO EXCEPTIONS
• NO VISITORS ARE ALLOWED IN CLASSROOM OR LAB. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Student Honesty:

• ALL FORM OF DISHONESTY, INCLUDING CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM, WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. A grade of ZERO (0) will be given for any exam, project, etc., on which the student cheated or used plagiarized material. In addition, the student shall be subject to disciplinary action, as set forth under "Judicial Procedures" in the CCCC Student Handbook which may result in their dismissal from the college.
